How state unclaimed-property programmes work

Companies must turn over money they cannot return to its owner after a dormancy period, usually one to five years depending on the item and state. The state holds it for you with no deadline in most cases. The state search is free.

What this is

The money is held where the owner's last known address was. Typical items are final wages, utility deposits, bank balances, insurance proceeds and stock dividends. Each state runs its own site, and most share one national search page.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. Search your current state's site, then each previous state.
  2. If you find a match, follow that state's claim steps and send copies of ID.
  3. Keep a record of the date you filed and any claim number you receive.
Before you go

States differ on how long they take and what proof they need. Read the state's own page rather than trusting a summary, including ours.

Checked against the official page on 2 October 2026. Rules and screens change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Questions people ask

How long does a claim take?

It depends on the state and the paperwork. Some small claims are quick; larger ones may need weeks.

Do I get interest?

Usually not. The state returns the amount it holds.

Will I be contacted?

States try, but addresses go stale. Search yourself.
