Start here: searching for your own money is free, in every state.
MissingMoney.com is the free search linked to NAUPA, the association of state unclaimed property administrators. Each state card below links to that state's own official search. No fee, no percentage: if a site asks for one, it is not the official route.
The Claim Desk · 20 October 2026
State governments hold unclaimed property: forgotten bank accounts, uncashed cheques, insurance proceeds, utility deposits and similar items that companies could not return to their owners. Each state publishes its own figures, in its own format, for its own period.
We read the official programme pages, press releases and annual reports of all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 20 October 2026. For 19 of 51 jurisdictions we found at least one figure that we could check against the official source. For the other 32 we found none, and we leave them blank rather than guess.
Every figure below carries its source link, the period the source gives, and our reading date. Figures are quoted as the source states them, without rounding. They are not comparable across states: some are money held, some money returned, some counts of claims.
For these 32 jurisdictions we did not find a figure we could confirm in an official source on 20 October 2026. That says nothing about how much they hold. Go straight to the official search:
This is an unofficial compilation. The Claim Desk is an independent publisher, not a government agency. We only use what an official state source (treasurer, comptroller, controller, revenue or auditor office) says in its own words, and we read each page ourselves on 20 October 2026. Where a source does not name its period, we say so. "Held" means property currently in the state's custody. "Returned" means paid out to owners over the stated period. A claims count is not a count of people. Figures change; check the source before you rely on them. If you spot a mistake, tell us at [email protected] and we will correct it.
