Money held by a federal court: the Unclaimed Funds Locator

Federal courts hold money that was never paid out, often after bankruptcy cases. The courts run one free search, the Unclaimed Funds Locator, that covers all of them. You can search by name for yourself or a business.

What this is

When a bankruptcy trustee cannot reach a creditor, the money goes to the court. Over time those balances pile up. Creditors who moved, companies that renamed themselves and people who ignored a mailing are the usual owners.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. Open the Unclaimed Funds Locator.
  2. Search by name; try a business name as well.
  3. If you find a match, the locator explains how to file a claim with that court.
Before you go

A court will want proof that you are the owner. It will not release money to a third party that charges a percentage without extra paperwork.

Checked against the official page on 2 October 2026. Rules and screens change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Questions people ask

Is this the same as the state search?

No. The state holds dormant bank accounts and refunds; courts hold money from cases.

Can a business search?

Yes. Use the business name and any former names.

Is there a fee?

The search is free. Check the court's own page for filing details.
