A pension from an old employer: how to check if you are owed one

If a company pension plan ended and you were a member, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation may hold your benefit. Its unclaimed-retirement-benefits search is free and works by name. You do not need an account, and nobody should charge you to run it.

What this is

Many people worked a few years somewhere, earned a small pension and moved on. If that plan later ended, the benefit may now be with PBGC, a federal agency. The amounts are often small monthly sums that begin at retirement age, so the point of searching early is to know the benefit exists.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. Write down every employer you can remember, oldest first.
  2. Use the PBGC unclaimed-retirement-benefits search with your last name and the company.
  3. If you find a match, PBGC tells you how to apply and what paperwork it wants.
Before you go

A pension is not the same as a 401(k). A 401(k) left with an old employer is a different search, usually through the state or the plan's current administrator.

Checked against the official page on 2 October 2026. Rules and screens change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Questions people ask

Is PBGC the same as Social Security?

No. PBGC is a separate federal agency that protects pensions from company plans that ended.

What if my old employer no longer exists?

That is exactly when PBGC may be holding the benefit. Search by the old company name.

Can a family member claim my pension after I die?

Sometimes, depending on the plan. PBGC explains who can claim on its page.
