Unclaimed money after a family member dies

Search for the person's name in their state and every state they lived in, then run the federal searches. Claiming usually needs a death certificate and proof you are an heir or the executor. Never pay a finder for this.

What this is

Estates often leave small loose ends: a last paycheque, an insurance refund, a utility deposit, an old bond. Because nobody was watching those accounts, they end up in state unclaimed-property programmes.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. List every state the person lived in, from the oldest address forward.
  2. Search each state's official unclaimed-property site by their full name and any former name.
  3. Run the federal searches: savings bonds, pensions, VA insurance, FDIC and NCUA, and HUD refunds.
Before you go

Rules about who may claim differ by state. If the estate is large or contested, speak to a probate attorney before filing any claim.

Checked against the official page on 2 October 2026. Rules and screens change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Questions people ask

Who can claim for a person who has died?

Typically the executor or heirs, with proof. Each state office lists its own rules.

Do I need to open probate?

Not always for small amounts. Check the state's claim form and its rules for heirs.

How far back should I search?

Every address from the last decade or two is a reasonable start, then older ones.
