Unclaimed money in Hawaii, and how to ask for it.

How do I find unclaimed money in Hawaii?

Quick answer: To find unclaimed money in Hawaii, search your name for free at the Hawaii Department of Budget and Finance, the official state site. Searching costs nothing and needs no sign-up. Money goes to the state of the last address a company had for you, so also search every other state you have lived in.

Search every state you have ever lived in, not only this one. Each state only knows about the records handed to it, and a move across the Pacific leaves plenty behind.

Search Hawaii — free, official

Goes straight to the Hawaii Department of Budget and Finance. We take no cut and ask for nothing.

Searching Hawaii is free, and always will be.

The Unclaimed Money Handbook puts all fifty states, the name variations that turn money up and the paperwork each office asks for in one place. $9, instant PDF, no subscription. You can read a chapter free first.

The whole thing, in three steps

  1. Search Hawaii itself. The Hawaii Department of Budget and Finance runs the official search at https://budget.hawaii.gov/finance/unclaimedproperty/. Your name is enough to start.
  2. Then search every other state you have ever lived in. This is the step most people skip. Money is handed to the state of the last address a company had on file for you, so it sits in a state you moved away from years ago. The list of all fifty official offices is at unclaimed.org.
  3. Then the eight federal searches. Savings bonds, pensions from closed plans, failed banks, closed credit unions, undelivered tax refunds, FHA refunds, veterans' insurance and money held by federal courts. They are all on our front page, each with its official link.

A new Hawaii list every Tuesday

We check for new open refunds and send the list by email, free, no finder fee, one click to leave.

Free. We never sell or share your address, and one click gets you out.

Two things worth knowing before you start

The state will almost never contact you first. If somebody phones and offers to "release" your money for a fee, that is not Hawaii — that is a finder, and you do not need one.

And the honest number: most people find tens of dollars, not thousands. It is still your money, and the search costs nothing but twelve minutes.

The questions people ask us most

Does Hawaii owe me money?

It might. Hawaii holds money that companies could not hand back to you: an old paycheque, a utility deposit, a refund, a forgotten bank account. The state calls it unclaimed property. The only way to know is to search your name at the Hawaii Department of Budget and Finance. It is free and takes a few minutes.

Can I search in my parents' names?

Yes, and it is often where the money turns out to be. An estate that was settled years ago can leave a last cheque behind, and the Hawaii Department of Budget and Finance files it under the name it was written to — not under yours. Bring their maiden names and every address they lived at.

Which version of my name should I search?

Every version. The search matches names exactly, so a maiden name, a middle initial, or a misspelling on a paycheque from 1998 all count as a different person. Write the list out before you start, and work through it.

How much do people actually find?

Most people find tens of dollars, not thousands. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a dream. It is worth twelve minutes, it is your money, and nobody needs to take a cut of it.

Every state we have written up

Not here yet? The official office for all fifty states is listed at unclaimed.org.

A new list of open refunds, every Tuesday

Courts and regulators order refunds every week and hardly anybody collects them. We publish the open ones with the official link beside each, and it costs nothing to look.
