A tax refund that never arrived: what to check and how long you have

The IRS publishes a refund-status tool, and refunds that come back undeliverable can be reissued once your address is correct. If you never filed in a past year, generally you have about three years from the due date to claim a refund.

What this is

People miss refunds in two ways: the cheque was mailed to an old address and returned, or they did not file because they thought their income was too low. In both cases the money is not gone, but the clock matters.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. Use the IRS refund-status tool for returns you have already filed.
  2. If your address was wrong, update it with the IRS so a replacement can be sent.
  3. If you did not file for a year you earned money, check the IRS rules on how late a refund can still be claimed.
Before you go

The IRS will not ask for payment to release your refund and will not start by phoning or texting you. Treat any message that does as a scam.
